Q. When should I submit my scholarship application?

A: The earlier the better! Our deadline for submission shifts a bit each year, but generally falls on the third week in April.


Q. What if I am missing some documents?

A: We understand that some items may be delayed. Please submit the majority of the requested documents with the application and indicate when the others will be sent.


Q. What forms of Documentation of Foster Care are accepted?

A: Court documents, letters from DFCS or other state agencies.


Q. Who should I ask to submit letters of recommendation?

A: People that know you best and can paint a verbal picture of your character and strengths. These include teachers, mentors, counselors, clergy, coaches, tutors and community leaders are some of the best resources.


Q. Who is eligible for an nsoro scholarship?

A: Youth in foster care who meet one of the following requirements:

  • have been in public or private foster care for the 12 consecutive months leading up to and including their 18th birthday,
  • OR have been adopted or placed into legal guardianship from foster care after their 16th birthday,
  • OR have been orphaned for at least one year at the time of their 18th birthday.

Q. What does the nsoro scholarship cover?

A: The nsoro Scholarship covers all academic related expenses, including but not limited to tuition, room and board, academic fees, meal plan, books and academic supplies.


Q. Does the scholarship cover the cost of studying abroad?

A: The nsoro Scholarship does apply to studying abroad cost once the nsoro Scholar has completed a minimum of one academic year in our Scholarship Program at an accredited institution in the United States.


Q. Is there an nsoro Scholarship for graduate school?

A: Yes, nsoro scholarships can be applied to fund Graduate school through age 26.


Q. Can an nsoro Scholar combine their merit-based leadership scholarship with other scholarships to pay room and board and other colleges expenses?

A: Yes, our scholarship is regularly applied in tandem with ETV, Pell, Chaffee, Hope and other academic scholarships.


Q. Do I need to keep a minimum GPA to keep the scholarship?

A: The minimum GPA to apply and maintain your nsoro Scholarship is 2.0.

Regarding the nsoro Scholarship Program:

We award academic scholarships to 2 year, 4 year, vocational, trade and graduate school.  Our application timeline begins every January 1st and closes April 15th every year.  The nsoro Foundation Scholarship Committee meets the third week in April to review, vote and award new Scholarships.  This committee also selects two essay winners, a male and female candidate whose essay best articulates the answer to our annual essay question.  All scholarship recipients are notified the first week of May of their nsoro Scholarship.

Q. Who funds the nsoro scholarship?

A: 100% of the funding for nsoro scholarships is provided by private donations by individuals and corporate partnerships.
